Dongju

we spent 1 day each on Dongju and Xiju, as you can see from the map these 2 are the smallest islands of Matsu

- Dongquan light house

it's located at north west side of the island, very picturesque white lighthouse

you see cannons all over the islands

here they also have the Northern Fujian style stone houses

- Fuzheng beach

it's a nice beach to spend some time, we came across a local guy collecting clams with his dog

Matsu people like to say their fridge is at the sea, whenever they want to cook

they just go to the sea and take something as if it's their own fridge

perks of living by the sea!

so cute that the dog is trying to help!!

I found one by digging with my hands!

nice place for photos

there are some trails that you can hike up, and the view is really nice

this place we absolutely loved!!! best scallion pan cake ever

the food places in Matsu are mainly for the troops so you can imagine they are prepared for hungry boys

the scalion pancake is very thick, panfried with 2 eggs, and look at that big plate of fried chicken!

we loved it so much we skipped the breakfast in the hostel to have breakfast at the pancake place

(I'm sure the breakfast in the hostel has to be good too, the hostel is owned by “boat boss",

he hosts fishers so he knows his seafood alright!)

the danbing (egg pancake) is also amazing

here's the name of the shop, huamei 華美美食

there are not that many food places in Dongju so you'll easily come across it

we booked a blue tears tour with the hostel owner, I did my research online before going and he is one

of the guides that study the happening times and conditions of blue tears, I suppose he's implementing the techniques used

for fishing in blue tears, and it was really worth it!! it's 350 NTD per person, you don't need to be a hostel guest to book,

here is the facebook fanpage of boat boss hostel

we went in early August, there were less blue tears but the "star sand" was much brighter

you see them when you stomp hard on the beach, they light up for a few secons

later in the night when there were more I was able to take a pic with my phone (shutter time 1 second)

this pic was taken by boat boss, he asked us to stomp very hard to make a shape then he took pictures right after

this is a picture he took these days (2019/4/25) the season is starting!!

Xiju

this is the most quiet island, but it has the best beaches in our opinion if you love beaches

- Banyan tunnel

it's not very long, but this banyan tunnel with big banyan trees is a sight to see

this military hospital covered in climbing plants looks nice - but the dog barked at us like crazy!

you have to pass a military base to go to this lookout, and some parts you cannot take photos

the islands on the east side of the island are called snake islands

it is a habitat to an endangered spieces of terns "Chinese crested terns"

we found this little white sand beach close to the power company, the beach is bigger during low tide

palm trees along the road

- Kunqiu beach

here you can see criss cross tides, water is quite shallow and the beach will be almost gone during high tide

below is a picture taken by 陳善澔 2019/4/24

blue tears with the criss cross tides must be beautiful!

when we went there we saw some star sand on the beach but it was quite hard to take pictures,

as you can see from above picture there were so many fishing boats from China and they were all really bright

so the blue tears would have to be very bright for it to show on the photo!

I found a big clam! didn't really plan to eat it so I put it back

had mussels at the hostel we stayed in, they are HUGE!!

this hostel is very new, opened one month before we went (2018 July)

西莒山海一家會館 owners were super friendly too, this is their facebook page

each room comes with a balcony with great sea view
